Trump Warns “Very Severe Consequences” Ahead of Summit
U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that there will be “very severe consequences” if Russian President Vladimir Putin does not agree to end the war in Ukraine following their summit scheduled for August 15 in Alaska.
Trump’s Statement Before the Summit
Trump made the remarks during a virtual meeting with European leaders, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He described the upcoming summit as a “feel-out meeting” to gauge Putin’s willingness to negotiate, and noted the possibility of a follow-up three-way meeting with Zelenskyy.
Skepticism From Ukraine
Despite expressing uncertainty about whether he could persuade Putin to agree to a ceasefire, Trump stressed the need for Putin to stop the war, warning that failure to do so would bring serious repercussions. Ukrainian leaders remain cautious, with Zelenskyy warning against unilateral agreements without Ukraine’s direct involvement.
