Trump Warns UK Over China Engagement

U.S. President Donald Trump has warned Western allies against expanding business ties with China, calling such moves “very dangerous,” as British Prime Minister Keir Starmer concluded his official visit to Beijing. Trump made the remarks while commenting on recent diplomatic engagements by the United Kingdom and Canada with China.

Starmer Meets Xi, Pushes Trade Ties

Keir Starmer met Chinese President Xi Jinping during the visit, focusing on trade, investment, and market access for British companies. The trip marked the first visit by a UK prime minister to China since 2018. Starmer said the UK was seeking a more pragmatic and stable relationship with Beijing while maintaining its strategic partnership with the United States.

Trump Criticises UK and Canada

Trump criticised Starmer’s outreach to China and also targeted Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, warning that deeper economic ties with Beijing could invite trade retaliation. Trump has previously threatened higher tariffs on Canadian imports if Ottawa expands economic cooperation with China.

Balancing China and the West

Starmer stated that the UK does not need to choose between the US and China, stressing that economic engagement must be balanced with national security concerns. The comments highlight growing tensions among Western allies over how to manage relations with China amid shifting global trade dynamics.
