Trump Warns Iran Trade Partners of Economic Costs
US President Donald Trump has threatened severe economic consequences for any country that continues providing financial, commercial or logistical support to Iran, announcing what he described as an unprecedented campaign of economic isolation against Tehran as the US-Iran conflict approaches six months.
Trump Announces Economic Campaign Against Iran
Trump said Washington would launch what he called the “most crushing economic operation” ever imposed on a country after accusing Iran of failing to reach an agreement with the United States.
The US president said the campaign would target Iran’s ability to access international finance, conduct oil trade and use intermediaries to move funds or goods.
Trump described the strategy as an “Economic D-Day” intended to further isolate Tehran and restrict resources available to the Iranian government.
Trump Warns Countries Trading With Iran
Trump warned that countries allowing financial institutions, businesses, airports or government entities to provide Iran with an economic lifeline could themselves face major US economic consequences.
He specifically highlighted oil smuggling, swap arrangements, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries and front companies as activities Washington wants stopped.
Trump did not identify individual countries or specify exactly what penalties would be imposed, saying only that those involved “know who they are”.
US Seeks Greater Economic Isolation of Iran
The warning potentially raises risks for countries and companies maintaining commercial relationships with Iran, particularly those involved in energy purchases and financial transactions.
Washington has already imposed extensive sanctions targeting Iran’s oil exports, financial networks and entities accused of helping Tehran bypass restrictions.
The latest announcement signals an attempt to expand that pressure internationally as diplomatic efforts remain stalled and tensions surrounding Iran and the Strait of Hormuz continue.
