Trump Urges Iranians to Keep Protesting Amid Unrest
US President Donald Trump has publicly encouraged anti-government demonstrators in Iran to continue their protests and said that “help is on its way,” as a nationwide crackdown escalates. Trump also cancelled meetings with Iranian officials until the “senseless killing” of protesters stops, signalling stronger US pressure on Tehran.
Intensifying Protests and Crackdown
Iran has been gripped by widespread anti-regime protests since late December 2025, sparked by economic hardship and quickly expanding into broader unrest. Security forces have responded with force, and authorities have shut down much of the country’s internet access amid the demonstrations, hampering communication and reporting. Rights groups say hundreds, and possibly more than a thousand people, have been killed in the crackdown, though exact figures are difficult to verify due to restricted information.
US Measures and Strategic Pressure
Trump’s stance includes threats of tariffs and military options if Iran’s leadership continues the repression. He has also indicated he may explore ways to restore connectivity inside Iran to support communications for protesters. Iran’s government has denounced external interference and maintained that it remains prepared for confrontation while also offering to engage in diplomacy under “fair” conditions.
