Trump Threatens Canada With 100% Tariffs Over China Deal
U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to impose 100% tariffs on all Canadian goods entering the United States if Canada follows through with a new trade deal with China. Trump made the warning in a social media post, saying such a pact would harm U.S. interests and characterising Canada as potentially serving as a “drop-off port” for Chinese exports into the U.S.
Canada’s China Trade Moves
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney recently travelled to China and announced steps to strengthen trade ties, including lowering some tariffs and expanding market access for Chinese-made electric vehicles into Canada under preferential terms. Ottawa has sought to diversify trade links amid ongoing tensions with the U.S. over levies and broader geopolitical disputes.
Rising Diplomatic Tension
Trump’s threat marks a significant escalation in trade rhetoric between the U.S. and Canada, two historically close economic partners. He warned that a Canada-China deal would undermine Canadian businesses and social stability. The heightened tensions follow disagreements at the World Economic Forum, where Carney publicly discussed global economic shifts and the need for cooperation among middle powers.
