Trump Terminates Trade Talks With Canada

President Donald Trump has declared that trade negotiations with Canada are “terminated” after an advertisement aired in the United States criticising his tariff policies. The ad, funded by Ontario officials, featured clips from a 1987 Ronald Reagan speech that were edited to highlight opposition to U.S. tariffs.

Trump Calls Ad Misleading

Trump denounced the commercial on social media, calling it misleading and accusing Canadian authorities of misrepresenting Reagan’s words to interfere in U.S. trade policy. He argued that such tactics undermine the spirit of bilateral talks and left no option but to suspend discussions.

Reagan Foundation Supports Trump

The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation issued a statement supporting Trump’s stance, confirming that excerpts from Reagan’s address were used without authorisation and altered to fit a political narrative.

Strained Relations Continue

The cancellation adds to growing tensions between Washington and Ottawa, with disputes over tariffs, dairy trade, and steel already testing ties. Analysts say that while talks may resume in the future, the rift highlights the fragile state of North American trade relations.
