Trump Signs Bill to End US Government Shutdown
US President Donald Trump has signed a major spending bill into law, bringing an end to a brief partial shutdown of the federal government after lawmakers reached a last-minute funding agreement.
Funding Restored Across Key Departments
The legislation restores funding for most federal agencies that were affected by the shutdown, including departments linked to defence, education, health, labour and transportation. Government offices that had been forced to halt non-essential operations are expected to resume normal functioning immediately.
Temporary Extension for Homeland Security
While most departments received full-year funding, the bill provides a short-term extension for the Department of Homeland Security. This was done to allow additional negotiations between lawmakers over border security and immigration-related provisions.
The shutdown had begun after Congress failed to pass spending legislation before the funding deadline, leading to the furlough of thousands of federal workers. The White House said the bill ensures stability in government operations while discussions continue on unresolved policy issues.
