Trump Says US Needs to Control Greenland
US President Donald Trump has said the United States needs to “own” Greenland to prevent Russia and China from expanding their strategic presence in the Arctic. He argued that the territory’s location makes it critical to American national security and warned that rival powers were seeking greater influence in the region.
Trump said that existing military arrangements were not enough and claimed ownership would provide long-term security advantages. He linked Greenland directly to missile defence, Arctic shipping routes, and broader geopolitical competition involving Moscow and Beijing.
Why Greenland Matters Strategically
Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark and already hosts a US military base under longstanding defence agreements. Its position between North America and Europe makes it vital for early-warning systems and Arctic surveillance. The island is also believed to hold significant mineral resources, including rare earth elements, adding to its strategic value.
Reaction from Denmark and Europe
Denmark has firmly rejected any suggestion of transferring Greenland, stating that its future is for Greenlanders and Denmark to decide. European leaders have also reiterated support for Greenland’s sovereignty, warning that such statements could strain diplomatic ties within NATO.
Trump’s remarks come as Arctic competition intensifies, with Russia expanding its military footprint and China increasing its economic and scientific activities in the region.
