Trump Says TikTok Deal Reached, Will Talk to Xi

U.S. President Donald Trump said a framework agreement has been reached with China regarding TikTok’s operations in America. He added that he will speak with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday to finalise the deal.

Talks & Key Details

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed that the framework was part of trade negotiations conducted recently in Madrid. The agreement is meant to address U.S. concerns over national security, data handling, and the ownership of TikTok.

Remaining Issues

While a deal has been reached in principle, several terms remain unresolved. These include how much control China’s parent company ByteDance will retain, what happens to TikTok’s proprietary algorithm, and how U.S. user data will be handled. The final details are expected to be clarified in the Trump-Xi discussion.

What This Means

If the deal is confirmed, TikTok may avoid an outright ban in the U.S. The legislation passed in 2024 requires divestiture of the app or risk being banned over data security concerns. Trump has previously extended deadlines multiple times to allow negotiations to continue.
