Trump Says TikTok Deal Approved, China Visit Next Year

President Donald Trump said that a deal involving TikTok has been “approved” following a recent phone conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping. He indicated that this agreement would allow TikTok to continue operating in the US under new terms.

China Visit Planned

Trump also announced that he plans to visit China in early 2026. Before that, he is expected to meet Xi at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in South Korea in October. Xi is also expected to visit the US at a later, suitable time.

Deal Details Still Unclear

Despite Trump’s statements, Chinese officials have caution-flagged that any deal must comply with Chinese law. They also note that while the conversation was described as “very productive,” there is no public confirmation from them of a finalized agreement. Some of the terms being discussed reportedly involve shifting control of TikTok’s US operations to US entities and ensuring data stays under stricter oversight.

Reactions and Legal Context

Congress has pushed for TikTok to be divorced from ByteDance, its Chinese parent company, under a law passed in 2024. The law mandates that foreign adversary-controlled apps must be divested or banned. Some lawmakers are expressing concern over whether any deal will fully satisfy these legal requirements.
