Trump Says PM Modi Had Assured India Will Stop Sourcing Russian Oil

U.S. President Donald Trump said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had assured him India would stop buying oil from Russia. He added that the phase-out would not be immediate but would happen “within a short period.”

India’s position unclear

The Indian government has not confirmed Trump’s claim. Officials have made no public commitment to cease Russian oil imports.

India’s reliance on Russian oil

India is one of Russia’s biggest oil buyers, with Russian crude making up about 35–40 % of India’s imports in recent periods. Modi’s government has defended such imports as necessary to secure affordable energy amid global supply disruptions.

Market reaction

Following Trump’s remarks, global oil prices rose modestly. Markets also viewed the statement as intensifying pressure on Russia amid the Ukraine war.

Geopolitical tensions

Trump’s comments come amid broader U.S. efforts to curtail Russia’s energy revenues. His administration has already imposed steep tariffs on Indian goods in response to India’s Russian oil imports.
