Trump Says He Must Approve Zelensky’s Peace Proposal
US President Donald Trump has said that any peace agreement to end the war between Ukraine and Russia will require his “approval”, a stance he made ahead of a planned meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Florida. Trump’s comments came as Zelenskyy prepares to present a 20-point peace framework designed to help negotiate an end to nearly four years of conflict.
Trump told reporters that Zelenskyy “doesn’t have anything until I approve it”, indicating that he sees the United States as having a decisive role in shaping any potential deal. He also expressed cautious optimism about the upcoming discussions and said that he expected a constructive exchange with Zelenskyy.
Key Issues on the Agenda
Zelenskyy has said the proposed 20-point peace plan is “about 90% ready” and includes provisions on security guarantees for Ukraine, a possible demilitarised zone in contested areas, and mechanisms for reconstruction and long-term stability. Discussions are expected to cover sensitive topics such as the future of the Donbas region and security arrangements involving the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, two of the most challenging points in negotiations.
While Zelenskyy seeks firm backing from the United States and allies, Russia has continued military operations, signalling that peace talks will face significant hurdles.
Meeting Ahead
The Trump–Zelenskyy meeting is scheduled to take place this weekend, with both leaders aiming to clarify positions and push forward diplomatic efforts toward ending the war.
