Trump Says China “Forced Me” to Raise Tariffs
U.S. President Donald Trump defended his decision to impose a 100% tariff on Chinese goods, stating that Beijing’s actions left him with no choice. Speaking in Washington, Trump said China’s move to restrict the export of rare earth minerals, which are vital for global high-tech manufacturing, was the main trigger behind his decision.
Rare Earth Restrictions as Trigger
The President argued that the U.S. could not remain silent while China tightened control over resources critical to electronics, defense systems, and clean energy technology. “They forced me to do that,” Trump said, insisting the tariff announcement was aimed at protecting American industries from supply disruptions.
Concerns Over Sustainability
At the same time, Trump acknowledged that the steep tariff level might not be sustainable in the long term, admitting it could lead to higher costs for American businesses and consumers. He, however, maintained that the U.S. had to respond strongly to what he called “unfair leverage tactics” by Beijing.
Talks With Xi Jinping Planned
Trump also confirmed that he is preparing to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping in the coming weeks. The meeting is expected to focus on de-escalating tensions and exploring alternatives to prolonged trade confrontation. Economists warn that extended tariffs could slow growth in both economies and put further strain on global supply chains.
