Trump Repeats Claim Modi Said He’ll Stop Buying Russian Oil

U.S. President Donald Trump reiterated that Narendra Modi told him India “is not going to be doing the Russian-oil thing,” while also warning that India would “continue to pay massive tariffs” if it kept buying crude from Moscow.

India’s Response

The Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi rejected the claim, stating there was no record of Prime Minister Modi making such a commitment. Officials stressed that India’s energy imports are guided solely by national interest and market dynamics.

Trade Fallout

The remarks come amid ongoing trade tensions between the U.S. and India, with Washington imposing steep tariffs on Indian goods. By linking the tariffs to India’s Russian oil purchases, Trump’s comments are seen as an attempt to pressure New Delhi into altering its energy policy.
