Trump Reiterates India-Pakistan Truce Claims
U.S. President Donald Trump has once again repeated his claim that he personally brokered a truce between India and Pakistan during the May 2025 conflict. Speaking at a rally, Trump said he resolved the crisis in “just 24 hours” by threatening to impose 100 %, 150 % and even 200 % tariffs on both countries. According to him, this threat forced India and Pakistan to step back from confrontation and agree to peace.
India’s Response
The Indian government has firmly dismissed Trump’s version of events, stating that there was no role of the United States in securing the ceasefire. Officials clarified that trade talks and tariffs were never part of the discussion. Instead, the agreement was reached through direct military-level communication and diplomatic backchannels with Pakistan. New Delhi maintains that India acted independently in protecting its interests.
Context — The 2025 India-Pakistan Conflict
The conflict erupted after a terror attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 people in early May. India retaliated with cross-border strikes and drone operations, leading to heightened tensions. The situation continued for several days before the two countries reached a ceasefire on 10 May 2025 through military-to-military dialogue.
While Trump insists he played a decisive role, both Indian officials and international observers have pointed out that the truce was the result of bilateral mechanisms and not external intervention.
