Trump Rebukes Netanyahu Over Israeli Strike in Qatar

U.S. President Donald Trump issued a rare rebuke of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after Israel carried out an airstrike in Doha targeting Hamas leaders. Trump stressed that the decision to strike was made solely by Israel and described it as “counterproductive,” arguing that it damaged both American and Israeli strategic interests.

Regret Over Timing

The White House acknowledged that a U.S. envoy had been tasked with warning Qatar before the strike, but the alert was delivered too late. Trump admitted his frustration, saying, “I’m not thrilled about the way it went down,” and pledged that such a lapse in communication would not be repeated. The U.S. Embassy in Doha had briefly advised citizens to shelter in place during the attack, highlighting the seriousness of the incident.

Diplomatic Response from Qatar

Qatar, which hosts ceasefire talks and the U.S. Al Udeid Air Base, condemned the strike and questioned the reliability of Israeli and American coordination. The Qatari government confirmed casualties, including at least one of its security officers, and warned that such actions could undermine regional stability.

Israel’s Position

Israel defended the strike, claiming it was aimed at Hamas operatives who had orchestrated attacks against Israeli civilians. While Hamas confirmed some casualties, its senior leadership survived. The incident added new strain to Israel’s relations not only with Qatar but also with its Western allies, who are urging restraint.

New Diplomatic Direction

Following the strike, Trump spoke separately with Netanyahu and Qatari leaders. He assured Doha that similar actions would not recur and instructed Secretary of State Marco Rubio to accelerate negotiations on a U.S.–Qatar Defense Cooperation Agreement, signaling a shift toward strengthening diplomatic assurances with Qatar while maintaining pressure on Hamas.
