Trump Reacts to Nobel Peace Prize Snub

U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday responded to not receiving the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, saying that Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado accepted the award in his “honour.” He claimed Machado had called to tell him, “you really deserved it,” though adding, “I didn’t say, ‘Give it to me’ — but I think she might have.”

Trump on Support for Venezuela

Trump stated that he has been providing assistance to Machado “along the way” and that during Venezuela’s crisis, “they needed a lot of help.” He added he was “happy because I saved millions of lives.”

Nobel Prize Awarded to Machado

The 2025 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to María Corina Machado on October 10 in Oslo. The Norwegian Nobel Committee recognized her commitment to defending democratic rights in Venezuela and her efforts toward a peaceful transition from authoritarianism.

White House Criticism

The White House criticized the Nobel Committee’s decision, accusing it of placing “politics over peace.” Communications Director Steven Cheung said that the Committee ignored Trump’s contributions to global peace.

Questions Over Trump’s Claims

Some of Trump’s claims about resolving global conflicts have been challenged. Though he has pointed to ceasefire efforts in Gaza and mediation in other regions, analysts note inconsistencies or lack of independent verification of many such claims.

Analysts on Trump’s Campaigning

Observers say Trump’s intense effort to gain the prize, including public lobbying and frequent statements about his achievements, may have worked against him—since the Nobel Committee historically disfavors visible campaigning.
