Trump Questions Netflix-Warner Bros Merger
US President Donald Trump has warned that Netflix’s proposed $83-billion acquisition of Warner Bros Discovery could face major hurdles from regulators. Trump said the combined size of both companies “could be a problem” for competition in the entertainment sector.
He added that he expects to be involved in the review process when regulators examine the deal.
Deal Value And Concerns Raised
Under the agreement, Netflix would take over Warner Bros film and television studios, along with streaming platforms such as HBO and HBO Max. The deal is valued at around $82–83 billion.
Critics have argued that merging a major streaming platform with a major Hollywood studio could hurt competition, reduce options for consumers and give Netflix too much control over content and distribution.
Industry groups and some politicians have already raised concerns that a single company may dominate key parts of the streaming and production market.
Regulatory Scrutiny Ahead
The deal will now be examined by antitrust regulators in the United States and other countries. Approval is not guaranteed, and failure could trigger breakup fees under the agreement.
If cleared, the merger would reshape entertainment, combining one of the world’s biggest streaming services with a major film and TV production house.
