Trump then turned toward Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who was standing behind him, and remarked that Sharif “is going to help make that happen,” referring to peaceful relations between India and Pakistan. Sharif later credited Trump’s diplomacy with helping ease tensions.

The comments came against the backdrop of a ceasefire reached in May 2025 between India and Pakistan, following several days of clashes after a terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir. While India has firmly denied any U.S. role in the truce, both Trump and Sharif continue to claim Washington’s diplomacy contributed to calming the situation.
