Trump Offers to Restart Nile Water Mediation
US President Donald Trump has said the United States is ready to restart mediation efforts on the long-running Nile water dispute, according to a letter sent to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.
Focus on Nile Water Sharing
In the communication, Trump expressed Washington’s willingness to facilitate talks aimed at resolving disagreements over the sharing of Nile River waters. The dispute mainly involves Ethiopia and centres on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, a project that has been a source of regional tension for years.
Regional Context
Egypt has repeatedly voiced concerns that the dam could threaten its downstream water security, while Ethiopia maintains that the project is vital for electricity generation and economic development. Sudan, also affected by Nile water flows, has been part of earlier negotiations and discussions.
Diplomatic Signal
Trump’s outreach signals renewed US interest in playing a mediating role in the region. While no timeline has been announced for fresh talks, the offer has revived debate on international mediation as a way to break the deadlock over one of Africa’s most sensitive transboundary water disputes.
