Trump Links Russia Sanctions to NATO Consensus
U.S. President Donald Trump said he is ready to impose “major sanctions” on Russia but only if all NATO countries agree and collectively halt their purchases of Russian oil. He made the statement in a post on his social media platform.
Call for NATO Action
Trump urged every NATO member to stop buying Russian oil, stressing that sanctions would only be effective if enforced jointly. He said coordinated pressure is necessary to limit Moscow’s revenues.
Tariffs on China Proposed
Alongside his remarks on Russia, Trump suggested imposing tariffs between 50% and 100% on Chinese goods. He argued that China’s purchases of Russian oil strengthen Moscow and must be countered with strong economic measures.
NATO Members Criticised
Trump criticised NATO countries such as Turkey, Hungary, and Slovakia for continuing to import Russian oil. Analysts note that achieving full consensus across NATO on sanctions will be challenging, given energy dependencies in parts of Europe.
