Trump Imposes Up to 100% Tariffs on Drones
US President Donald Trump has announced tariffs of up to 100% on imported drones and key components, saying the measures are intended to reduce dependence on foreign suppliers, strengthen domestic manufacturing and address national security risks linked to unmanned aircraft systems.
Trump Imposes 100% Tariff on Sensitive Drones
The highest tariff rate of 100% will apply to drones considered particularly sensitive for national security, including aircraft with a maximum take-off weight above 25 kilograms and drones equipped with thermal imaging capabilities.
Docking stations and certain critical components associated with these systems will also attract the 100% tariff.
Smaller drones without the same sensitive capabilities will generally face a 25% duty under the new measures.
US Drone Tariffs Target Foreign Dependence
The Trump administration said America’s reliance on foreign-made drones and components creates supply-chain and cybersecurity vulnerabilities.
Unmanned aircraft have become increasingly important for military, security, commercial and emergency-response operations, increasing concerns over dependence on overseas manufacturers.
The measures are also aimed at reducing reliance on Chinese drone technology and encouraging companies to expand manufacturing and supply chains within the United States.
US Allies Get Lower Drone Tariffs
Imports from several US allies will face lower tariff rates.
Qualifying drones and components from the European Union, Japan, South Korea, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Taiwan will face a 15% tariff, while eligible UK products will face a 10% rate.
Most of the new tariffs are scheduled to take effect 21 days after the presidential proclamation, while duties covering some less-sensitive components will begin later.
