Trump Grant Cuts to Harvard Blocked, $2B Restored

A federal judge has ruled that the Trump administration acted unlawfully in canceling over $2.2 billion in research grants to Harvard University, ordering that the funds be reinstated.

Judge Declares Cuts Illegal

U.S. District Judge Allison Burroughs held that the administration’s move violated the First Amendment and amounted to “illegal retaliation.” The court stated that the government failed to follow due process under the Administrative Procedure Act and also breached provisions of the Civil Rights Act.

Antisemitism Argument Rejected

While the court acknowledged ongoing concerns about antisemitism on Harvard’s campus, it concluded that the grant cancellations were not a proportionate or legally justified response. Judge Burroughs ruled that the administration used the issue as a pretext to pressure the university, noting that much of the research funding was unrelated to the allegations.

Reaction from Both Sides

Harvard welcomed the decision, calling it a defense of academic freedom and institutional independence. The Trump administration, however, criticized the ruling, with the White House labeling Judge Burroughs an “activist.” Officials announced plans to appeal and said Harvard would remain barred from new federal grants until campus antisemitism concerns are addressed.
