Trump Gives Putin 10-12 Days to Strike Ukraine Deal

U.S. President Donald Trump has given Russian President Vladimir Putin a 10 to 12-day window to agree to a peace deal in Ukraine or face fresh sanctions. Speaking after a meeting with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer in Scotland on July 28, Trump said the earlier 50-day deadline is no longer valid, citing a lack of progress in negotiations.

He warned that if Moscow does not respond with meaningful steps toward ending the war, Washington will impose new sanctions targeting Russia’s key exports, including oil, gas, and uranium. Trump also hinted that countries continuing to import these Russian commodities could also face penalties.

Ukraine Supports U.S. Move

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed Trump’s announcement, calling it a “much-needed push” to bring Russia back to the negotiating table. Kyiv has been urging global leaders to step up pressure on Moscow after a recent wave of Russian strikes in Kharkiv and Dnipro.

The new timeline means Russia has until approximately August 9 to signal its willingness to enter a formal ceasefire or peace framework. Trump has previously voiced support for a negotiated end to the war but has grown increasingly critical of what he described as “empty discussions.”

Previous Talks Faltered

Earlier this month, indirect talks between Ukraine and Russia in Istanbul ended with no major breakthrough. However, both sides had agreed on a limited prisoner exchange. Since then, diplomatic activity has slowed while battlefield intensity has risen.

Analysts say the shorter deadline signals Washington’s frustration with Moscow’s posture. However, it remains unclear how the Kremlin will respond, especially given its previous dismissals of Western ultimatums. The U.S. is reportedly in discussions with European allies to align any upcoming sanctions for maximum impact.
