Trump Ends Secret Service Protection for Kamala Harris
President Donald Trump has ordered the cancellation of Secret Service protection for former Vice President Kamala Harris, effective September 1, 2025. Harris had continued to receive security under an extension granted by former President Joe Biden, which went beyond the standard six-month protection period.
Standard vs. Extended Coverage
By law, former vice presidents are entitled to six months of Secret Service protection after leaving office. Biden’s memorandum extended Harris’s coverage until January 2026. Trump’s directive overrides that extension, ending federal protection earlier than planned.
Timing and Security Concerns
The move comes just as Harris is set to begin a 15-city book tour in September for her memoir “107 Days.” Democratic leaders criticized the decision, calling it politically motivated and potentially risky. Harris’s office thanked the Secret Service team for their service, while Senator Adam Schiff described the action as “a dangerous reminder” of Trump’s use of power against opponents.
