Trump Defends Tariffs After Court Ruling
U.S. President Donald Trump defended his wide-ranging tariff program after a federal appeals court declared most of the duties illegal. Trump argued that tariffs are critical to safeguarding America’s economy and national security, warning that without them, “our country would be completely destroyed.” He also thanked a lone Obama-appointed judge who dissented from the ruling, describing it as a rare acknowledgment of his trade strategy.
Legal Ruling on Emergency Powers
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, in a 7–4 ruling, found that Trump exceeded his powers under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). The court ruled that such broad trade restrictions require congressional approval. While most tariffs were struck down, a temporary stay keeps them in effect until October 14, giving the administration time to seek a higher appeal.
Appeal and Alternative Strategies
The Trump administration has signaled its intent to take the case to the Supreme Court. Officials are also considering alternative legal mechanisms, including provisions from older trade laws, to preserve parts of the tariff program. Meanwhile, trade negotiations with major partners continue, as Washington attempts to balance legal setbacks with ongoing economic diplomacy.
