Trump Criticises Canada Over Golden Dome Plan
U.S. President Donald Trump has criticised Canada for opposing his proposed “Golden Dome” missile defence system linked to Greenland’s strategic location. Trump said Canada’s rejection of the plan and closer economic ties with China could weaken its security.
Trump’s Comments At Davos
Speaking during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Trump argued the proposed defence shield would benefit both the U.S. and Canada. He claimed Canada should be more appreciative of U.S. support and warned that stronger links with China might leave Canada vulnerable, using the phrase that “China will eat them up” in a year.
Canada’s Position And Wider Context
Canadian leaders have not endorsed the Golden Dome concept and are focused on diversifying trade, including with China. Trump’s broader push for Arctic security and Greenland arrangements has already strained ties with Denmark, which has made clear Greenland is not for sale. Discussions on defence cooperation and Arctic strategy continue amid differing views from allies.
