Trump Claims Tariffs Averted India-Pakistan War
U.S. President Donald Trump has once again claimed that during the May 2025 military standoff between India and Pakistan, he personally intervened by warning both countries that the U.S. would impose “tariffs so high, your head’s going to spin” to force a ceasefire.
India Rejects Intervention Claim
Indian officials have consistently rejected Trump’s version of events, maintaining that the ceasefire was the result of direct talks between the two countries’ military commanders and not due to U.S. intervention.
Escalation of U.S.-India Trade Tensions
Trump’s remarks come amid a sharp escalation in trade tensions. The U.S. government has raised tariffs on Indian goods to 50 percent, including a 25 percent “reciprocal” duty and an additional 25 percent penalty tied to India’s purchases of Russian oil. India has called these measures “unfair, unjustified and unreasonable.” Analysts warn that the tariffs could strain strategic ties and push India closer to partners like Russia and China.
