Trump Calls Musk “Wonderful Guy” Amid Big Bill Dispute

U.S. President Donald Trump has extended an olive branch to Elon Musk, calling the Tesla CEO a “wonderful guy” during a recent interview, even as Musk continues to criticize Trump’s sweeping tax and spending legislation known as the “Big, Beautiful Bill.” The comments come amid heightened tensions between the two influential figures, sparked by disagreements over electric vehicle mandates and federal spending.

Referring to Musk’s criticisms, Trump remarked, “He got a little upset. It wasn’t appropriate,” but added, “I like Elon. I’ve always liked him. He campaigned for me, and he was part of the government efficiency program.” Trump also noted that their recent contact has been minimal, suggesting that while there is no ongoing collaboration, he continues to hold Musk in high regard.

EV Mandate at Heart of Rift

At the core of Musk’s frustration is the bill’s impact on electric vehicle subsidies. Trump acknowledged that the legislation made it difficult for companies like Tesla, remarking that the EV mandate was “a tough thing for Elon” and reiterated, “He doesn’t want everybody to have to have an electric car.” The bill removes significant incentives for EVs while focusing on broader infrastructure and manufacturing reforms, which Musk believes could hamper innovation.

Musk, in earlier comments, described the bill as “utterly insane and destructive,” arguing that it would burden future generations with massive debt while undermining industries central to technological progress.

A Strategic Truce?

Despite the public spat, the recent tone from both sides suggests a potential de-escalation. Trump refrained from personal attacks and instead reaffirmed Musk’s past support, while Musk has gradually reduced his criticism on public platforms. Trump’s past threats to reconsider government contracts linked to Tesla have also not materialized into concrete actions, signaling an effort to keep communication lines open.
