Trump Calls for Sharp Increase in US Military Spending
US President Donald Trump has called for a major increase in American military spending, proposing that the defence budget be raised to around $1.5 trillion. If implemented, this would represent an increase of more than 50 percent compared with current defence outlays, making it the largest military budget in US history.
Speaking on the need for stronger national security, Trump said the proposed increase was necessary to prepare the United States for what he described as a more unstable global security environment. He argued that higher spending would modernise military capabilities, strengthen deterrence, and ensure the US maintains its global military edge.
Funding and Economic Claims
Trump said the proposed expansion in defence spending could be supported in part by revenue from new and existing tariffs on foreign goods. He also claimed that the overall economic impact would allow the government to manage debt levels while investing in national security. However, budget experts have questioned whether tariff revenues alone would be sufficient to finance such a large increase without significantly widening the fiscal deficit.
Defence Industry and Congressional Hurdles
Alongside the spending proposal, Trump criticised defence contractors over delays in weapons deliveries and rising costs. He suggested tighter oversight of contracts and warned against financial practices that do not prioritise faster production for the armed forces.
The proposal will require approval from the US Congress, where lawmakers are expected to closely scrutinise both the scale of the increase and its long-term fiscal implications. While supporters say the move is vital to counter emerging global threats, critics argue that the size of the proposed hike could strain public finances and divert resources from domestic priorities.
