Trump Announces US-Brokered Ceasefire Between India and Pakistan

In a dramatic diplomatic development, former US President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that India and Pakistan have agreed to a “full and immediate ceasefire” following intense overnight negotiations mediated by the United States. The announcement came through a post on Trump’s social media platform, Truth Social, and has since made international headlines.

Trump wrote: After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE. Congratulations to both Countries on using Common Sense and Great Intelligence. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

The declaration follows days of heightened military escalation between the two nuclear-armed neighbours, including cross-border drone strikes, missile exchanges, and retaliatory attacks on terror launchpads and military installations.

US-Led Diplomatic Push Halts Escalation

While there has been no official confirmation from either New Delhi or Islamabad at the time of reporting, diplomatic sources suggest that backchannel negotiations had been underway with strong pressure from Washington to de-escalate the crisis. Trump’s announcement signals the conclusion of those efforts, potentially averting a broader military conflict.

The US had previously expressed deep concern over the rapid escalation in the region and had been in close contact with both governments. The Trump-led mediation reportedly involved top American officials engaging with both Indian and Pakistani representatives throughout the night.

International Relief and Watchful Eyes

If implemented, the ceasefire would mark a significant pause in hostilities that have gripped South Asia for over a week, threatening regional stability. Global powers, including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and the European Union, had also urged restraint, but the US appears to have taken the lead in direct mediation.

While India has maintained that its military responses were defensive and targeted only at terror infrastructure, Pakistan has accused India of aggression. The ceasefire, if sustained, could create a diplomatic window for further dialogue.

All eyes are now on official statements from both countries. India’s Ministry of External Affairs and Pakistan’s Foreign Office have yet to publicly confirm or comment on the ceasefire announced by Trump.
