Trump Announces Russia-Ukraine Energy Ceasefire
President Donald Trump has announced what he called an immediate “energy ceasefire” between Russia and Ukraine, saying both sides had agreed to stop attacks on energy infrastructure. However, Ukraine said the announcement came as a surprise and Moscow had not immediately confirmed the agreement.
Trump Announces Immediate Energy Ceasefire
Trump said the ceasefire would take effect immediately and urged both Russia and Ukraine not to violate it.
The arrangement is intended to halt strikes on energy infrastructure, including Russian oil refineries and Ukrainian power facilities, which have become a major feature of the war.
Trump did not initially provide details on how the ceasefire would be monitored, how long it would last or what enforcement mechanism would apply.
Zelensky Says Announcement Was ‘News’ to Him
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Trump’s announcement was unexpected and that Kyiv was still waiting for details from Washington.
Zelensky nevertheless said Ukraine was prepared to support an energy ceasefire if Russia genuinely agreed to reciprocal restrictions.
He added that Ukraine would stop attacks on Russian oil refineries if Moscow stopped striking Ukrainian energy infrastructure.
Russia Yet to Publicly Confirm Agreement
There was no immediate confirmation from the Kremlin that Russia had formally agreed to the ceasefire.
The announcement came after renewed diplomatic engagement between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin and amid pressure to reduce global fuel-price volatility.
Russian attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure were reported even around the time of the announcement, underlining uncertainty over whether the ceasefire had actually begun.
The development could become an important confidence-building measure if both sides formally accept and implement reciprocal restrictions.
