Trump Announces 20% Hormuz Cargo Fee
US President Donald Trump has said the United States will charge a 20 percent fee on cargo moving through the Strait of Hormuz, while also announcing a renewed blockade targeting Iranian shipping.
Trump Announces Strait Of Hormuz Cargo Fee
Trump said the United States would act as the “guardian” of the Strait of Hormuz and seek reimbursement for the cost of securing the key maritime route.
He proposed a 20 percent charge on cargo shipped through the waterway, saying the fee would cover the cost of providing safety and security in the region. The announcement comes amid renewed tensions between Washington and Tehran over control and access to the strategic passage.
US Reinstates Iran Shipping Blockade
Trump also said the US was reinstating a blockade on Iranian shipping, while insisting the Strait of Hormuz would remain open for other countries.
The proposed measure is aimed at stopping Iranian ships and customers from entering or leaving through the route. However, the legal and operational details of the plan remain unclear, especially as the Strait of Hormuz is an international waterway central to global trade and energy flows.
Iran Rejects US Control Over Hormuz
Iran has rejected any US role in managing the strait and warned regional countries against cooperating with Washington over the waterway.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints, with a major share of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments passing through it. Any disruption or fee structure could raise concerns over shipping costs, energy prices and regional security.
The latest announcement adds another layer of uncertainty to the US-Iran standoff, with global markets closely watching whether the proposed fee and blockade will be implemented.
