Trump and Putin to Meet in Alaska to Discuss Ukraine War

U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are scheduled to meet on August 15, 2025, in Alaska. The summit aims to discuss a possible peace agreement to resolve the ongoing conflict with Ukraine. This will be the first direct U.S.–Russia leadership meeting since the escalation of the war.

Territorial Proposals Stir Controversy

President Trump hinted that the peace talks may involve a “territory swap”—a proposal that could see Ukraine giving up regions such as Crimea or parts of eastern Ukraine in exchange for a halt in fighting. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy strongly rejected the idea, insisting that Ukraine will not give up any land. He said any deal made without Ukraine’s participation would be “stillborn” and meaningless.

Why It Matters

This summit holds major global importance. While it offers a chance to reduce hostilities, it also raises concerns about excluding Ukraine from decisions about its own future. Analysts warn that any agreement lacking Ukraine’s consent could fail to achieve lasting peace and might harm international trust in the negotiation process.
