Trump And Japan’s Takaichi Sign Critical-Minerals Deal

U.S. President Donald Trump and Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi signed a framework agreement in Tokyo on October 28 to secure supplies of rare earths and critical minerals. The deal was finalised at the Akasaka Palace as both nations seek to reduce dependence on China.

The agreement aims to create diversified and transparent markets for rare earths and other essential minerals. It includes coordinated investments, policy tools, and a commitment by Japan to expand imports of U.S. goods such as soybeans and trucks to help balance trade.

Prime Minister Takaichi, Japan’s first female premier, called the agreement the beginning of a “golden age” in U.S.-Japan relations. President Trump praised the partnership and reaffirmed America’s commitment to Japan’s security and supply chain resilience. The talks also set the stage for Trump’s upcoming meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea later this week.
