Trump Admits 50% Tariffs Strained India Ties

U.S. President Donald Trump admitted that the decision to impose a 50% tariff on Indian goods had created a strain in relations with New Delhi. He described the move as “not easy to do” and called it “a big deal.”

Tariffs Linked to Russian Oil Purchases

The fresh 50% duty comes on top of the earlier 25% tariff, introduced in response to India’s purchases of discounted Russian crude. The combined measures have caused unease in trade and diplomatic circles.

Talks With Modi Planned

Trump said he plans to speak with Prime Minister Narendra Modi soon to resolve outstanding trade issues. Both governments are working to stabilize talks after weeks of tension following the tariff announcement.

India’s Response

India’s Chief Economic Adviser, V. Anantha Nageswaran, said the 50% tariff is unlikely to last long, warning that its continuation could damage bilateral relations further. He noted that the full impact would become evident in the coming quarters if not rolled back.
