Train Collision Near Bilaspur Leaves 11 Dead

At least 11 people died and around 20 were injured when a local passenger train collided with a stationary goods train near Bilaspur Junction at approximately 4 p.m. on Tuesday. The crash occurred on the Gevra–Bilaspur section, about 115 km from Raipur.

Crash Details

Preliminary reports indicate that the passenger train overshot a red signal and rammed into the cargo rake from behind. The force of impact was so severe that one coach climbed atop a wagon of the goods train. Rescue teams used gas-cutters to extricate trapped passengers from the mangled coach.

Investigation & Response

A full investigation has been launched by the railways. Officials say the driver of the passenger train was among the deceased and a co-pilot remains critically injured in hospital. Financial compensation has been announced for victims’ families and injured passengers as the rail services resume on the affected line.

Broader Implications

The incident highlights persistent concerns about signalling systems and safety protocols on Indian Railways. With millions of daily commuters across the network, such accidents underscore the urgent need for upgrades in technology and enforcement of operating procedures.
