TRAI Denies Blocking Congress SMS Campaign

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has rejected the Congress party’s claim that it blocked an SMS campaign by rejecting the application to send messages to party workers in Maharashtra. The Congress said the messages contained a link to a documentary titled How the MH 2024 Election Was Stolen.

TRAI’s Clarification

TRAI clarified that it had not received any application from the party regarding the SMS campaign. It emphasized that it does not approve or reject individual SMS templates—that responsibility lies with telecom service providers. TRAI noted that any rejection likely came from a service provider, not the regulator itself.

Congress Response

The Congress responded by accusing the government of coordinated suppression, pointing to what it described as synchronized actions between the Home Ministry, the Election Commission, and the telecom regulator. The party posted a screenshot of a rejection message, although TRAI reiterated it had no involvement in such decisions.

Political Context

This exchange comes amid ongoing controversy over the allegations of electoral irregularities during the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections.
