TN Revokes Licence, Shuts Down Coldrif Syrup Firm

The Tamil Nadu government has permanently revoked the manufacturing licence of Sresan Pharmaceuticals, the maker of the Coldrif cough syrup, and ordered the company’s shut down. This follows findings that the syrup contained toxic levels of diethylene glycol (DEG) and was linked to child deaths in Madhya Pradesh.

Contamination and Deaths

Lab tests showed the Coldrif syrup had DEG levels far exceeding permissible limits. At least 17 children died in Madhya Pradesh after consuming the syrup, according to health authorities. Two other syrups—Respifresh TR and ReLife—were also declared contaminated and were recalled.

Arrest and Enforcement

The owner of Sresan Pharmaceuticals has been arrested, and the factory in Kancheepuram district has been sealed. Two senior drug inspectors in Tamil Nadu have been suspended for their inaction, having failed to inspect the facility for years.

State authorities began by issuing a stop-production order and a temporary licence revocation earlier. After further investigation, the permanent cancellation was confirmed.

Wider Implications

States like Kerala and Madhya Pradesh have suspended the sale of Coldrif, and regulatory bodies are investigating all manufacturing units producing cough syrups. The case has triggered demands for stricter oversight of pharmaceutical quality and accountability in drug regulation.
