Tilak Varma Guides India To Four-Wicket Win Over NZ

India secured a thrilling four-wicket victory over New Zealand in the second T20I at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Saturday, October 24, with Tilak Varma playing a decisive unbeaten innings of 51 from 26 balls.

Chasing 181, India recovered from a difficult position of 70 for five to reach 181 for six with one ball remaining. The victory gave India a 2-0 lead in the five-match series, with Tilak named Player of the Match for his match-winning contribution.

Tilak And Nitish Rescue India’s Chase

New Zealand had posted 180 for five after Glenn Phillips scored 70 and Bevon Jacobs contributed 58. The pair shared a 116-run fourth-wicket partnership after the hosts struggled early in their innings.

India’s chase was disrupted by New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner, who claimed four wickets for 21 runs. Naman Dhir helped revive the innings with 31 from 17 deliveries before falling to Santner.

Tilak then joined Nitish Kumar Reddy, and the pair produced an unbeaten 69-run partnership from 30 balls for the seventh wicket. Nitish contributed 26 from 13 deliveries as India completed the chase in 19.5 overs.

Gambhir’s Message Inspired Tilak

Speaking after the victory, Tilak revealed that head coach Gautam Gambhir and batting coach Sitanshu Kotak had encouraged him before the match, expressing confidence in his ability to finish the game.

Tilak said the message remained in his mind as wickets continued to fall. Rather than attacking every delivery, he concentrated on taking the chase deep and managing the required scoring rate.

He also credited Dhir for keeping India competitive during a difficult phase. The two focused on rotating the strike against New Zealand’s spinners before Tilak and Nitish accelerated against the fast bowlers.

India Take Control Of T20I Series

Tilak expressed satisfaction at successfully completing the chase, particularly after India appeared to be heading towards defeat.

The victory followed India’s four-wicket win in the opening T20I, also played in Christchurch. The teams will meet in the third match in Wellington on October 27, with India having an opportunity to seal the series.
