Tesla Launches Model Y In India At ₹60 Lakh
Tesla has officially launched its first electric vehicle in India, the Model Y, with prices starting at ₹59.9 lakh for the Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) version and ₹67.9 lakh for the Long-Range RWD model. The announcement was made alongside the opening of Tesla’s first Indian showroom located at Bandra-Kurla Complex in Mumbai.
High Import Duties Affect Pricing
The significantly higher price compared to global markets is due to India’s import duties of nearly 70% on completely built electric vehicles. Tesla’s Model Y is being imported from its Shanghai Gigafactory, attracting over ₹20 lakh in customs duty per car.
Tesla’s pricing places it firmly in the luxury EV segment, targeting customers also considering premium offerings from BMW, Mercedes, and Audi.
Booking and Delivery Timeline
Online bookings are now open. Deliveries of the RWD variant are expected to begin in Q3 2025, with the Long-Range version—which boasts a range of up to 622 km per charge—likely to follow by October.
Tesla is also offering its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software in India for an additional cost of ₹6 lakh, though this feature is currently restricted in functionality due to local regulations.
Expansion and Local Plans
While there is no official word yet on local assembly, Tesla has hinted at expanding into other Indian cities, including Delhi and Bengaluru, in the near future. Discussions regarding domestic manufacturing are ongoing but have not been finalised.
The launch was welcomed by state leadership, with signals that India could become part of Tesla’s future production network if business conditions align.
Significance For Indian EV Industry
Tesla’s entry is expected to act as a catalyst for India’s evolving EV ecosystem. While current EVs make up only about 4% of total car sales in the country, premium offerings like the Model Y could accelerate adoption and spur further innovation and investment in the segment.
