Terrorist Attack in Pahalgam Leaves One Dead, Multiple Tourists Injured

On April 22, 2025, a terrorist attack occurred in the Baisaran Valley near Pahalgam, Anantnag district, Jammu and Kashmir. Gunmen opened fire on a group of tourists, resulting in the death of one individual and injuries to at least 12 others. The injured were promptly evacuated to local hospitals, with some in critical condition. The area, accessible only on foot or horseback, posed challenges for rescue operations. Local residents assisted in transporting the wounded, and helicopters were deployed to expedite medical evacuations.

Security Response and Investigation

Security forces have cordoned off the area and initiated a manhunt to apprehend the perpetrators. Authorities have labeled the incident a terrorist attack, attributing it to militants opposing Indian rule in the region. The Resistance Front (TRF), a shadow outfit of Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba, has claimed responsibility for the attack.​

Political Reactions

The attack has drawn widespread condemnation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, currently on a visit to Saudi Arabia, has been briefed on the situation and has instructed Union Home Minister Amit Shah to oversee the response. Home Minister Shah has vowed that those responsible will face the harshest consequences. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed profound shock and extended sympathies to the victims’ families. Other political leaders have also denounced the attack, emphasizing the need for stringent measures to prevent such incidents in the future.​
