Terror Suspect Planned to Infiltrate CJP Protest
The West Bengal Police Special Task Force has alleged that an arrested terror suspect planned to infiltrate a protest organised in support of the Cockroach Janta Party movement, prompting a wider investigation into his activities and contacts.
Terror Suspect Planned Protest Infiltration
Investigators identified the suspect as 24-year-old Hamim Mondal, who was arrested from a gated township in Purba Bardhaman. The STF suspects him of working with Pakistan-based handlers linked to the Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist organisation.
According to investigators, Mondal had considered entering the CJP-linked protest held in Kolkata over the NEET examination controversy. Authorities are examining his intended purpose and whether he planned to exploit the demonstration for reconnaissance, disruption or another unlawful activity.
The allegation remains part of an ongoing investigation and has not been established through a court verdict.
West Bengal STF Expands Investigation
The STF has also alleged that Mondal collected information about the movements of West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and another state minister. Investigators are examining his digital devices, communications and financial transactions to establish the extent of the suspected network.
Police said Mondal had posed as a technology professional and lived near police personnel for several months without attracting attention.
A woman identified as Arpita Sarkar was subsequently arrested from Sahibganj district in Jharkhand for her alleged association with Mondal. Investigators suspect she helped operate online profiles used to obtain personal information from political figures.
CJP Protest Security Under Scrutiny
The reported infiltration plan has intensified scrutiny of non-student elements entering demonstrations linked to the CJP movement.
Kolkata Police earlier arrested 11 people following violence and attacks on journalists during a July protest. Police said none of those arrested were students, although their cases are separate from the terror investigation.
Authorities are now examining whether Mondal had contacted any protest participants or organisers.
