Terror Attack Kills Six at Judiciary Centre in Zahedan
A terrorist attack on a judiciary building in Zahedan, a city in southeastern Iran’s Sistan-Baluchestan province, left six people dead and around 20 injured on July 26. The attack targeted a courthouse and was carried out using firearms and grenades. Iranian security forces responded swiftly and neutralised the attackers after a prolonged gunfight.
Courthouse Stormed by Militants
The assault began when heavily armed militants entered the judicial complex in Zahedan and opened fire on civilians and staff. Explosions were also reported during the attack, causing panic in the surrounding area. Security forces engaged the assailants for several hours and eventually shot dead three attackers.
Civilians and Court Staff Among Victims
Six individuals were confirmed dead, including a woman and a child. More than 20 others sustained injuries, several of whom are in critical condition. Victims included both court employees and local residents caught in the crossfire. Emergency medical teams responded promptly, and injured victims were moved to nearby hospitals.
Group Claims Responsibility
A Sunni extremist group claimed responsibility for the attack and accused the judiciary of discrimination against the Baluch minority population in the region. The group issued threats to judiciary staff, stating that no court official would be safe in Baluchestan going forward.
Region Plagued by Repeated Violence
Zahedan and the broader Sistan-Baluchestan province have witnessed repeated militant incidents due to ongoing ethnic and sectarian tensions. The region, which borders Pakistan and Afghanistan, has seen regular attacks on police posts, military personnel, and public institutions. It is considered one of Iran’s most volatile regions.
Iran Responds with Security Measures
In response to the incident, Iranian authorities have launched investigations and stepped up security across all major judicial and government buildings. Additional patrols and surveillance measures have been introduced in the province to deter further attacks. Officials condemned the attack as a cowardly act and reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining national security.
