Tensions Rise Over Greenland’s Future

A bipartisan group of US lawmakers arrived in Copenhagen to reassure Denmark and Greenland of congressional support amid rising tensions over President Donald Trump’s repeated push for US control of Greenland. They plan to meet senior officials to discuss security and diplomatic concerns.

European military presence grows

Several European countries, including France, Germany, Sweden and Norway, have deployed small numbers of troops to Greenland as part of a Danish-led Arctic security exercise meant to show commitment to NATO defence of the island. Denmark plans further NATO cooperation and a more permanent allied presence there.

Dispute over control

The talks between US, Danish and Greenlandic officials have yet to bridge differences over Washington’s position on Greenland’s role in Arctic security. Greenland’s leaders have strongly said the territory will remain part of the Kingdom of Denmark, resisting any suggestion of US takeover.

Regional and NATO impact

Russia has criticised Western claims about threats in the Arctic while European officials warn that major disagreements within NATO over Greenland’s future could strain alliance unity. Public opinion in the United States shows limited support for acquiring Greenland.
