Ten Doeschate Explains Why Bumrah Sat Out the Oval Test

India’s assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate has defended the decision to rest star pacer Jasprit Bumrah during the series-deciding fifth Test at The Oval. He said that the team chose to honour Bumrah’s request to play only three matches in the five-Test tour, balancing both fitness and fairness.

Managing a Heavy Workload

Ten Doeschate revealed that although Bumrah had featured in only three Tests, he bowled a heavy workload—around 119 overs across the series. The pace bowler himself had indicated before the tour that he would commit to just three games. The coaching staff felt it was right to respect that agreement to protect his long-term health.

Strategic Selection Based on Conditions

The coaching team weighed match conditions carefully. Ten Doeschate noted that while Oval often offers pace and bounce, it can also turn into a batting-friendly pitch. Having used Bumrah in two earlier Tests, the team decided to hold him out, hoping to give others the opportunity without overburdening their star bowler.

Upholding Team Culture

Doeschate emphasised that the decision was made in a spirit of trust and discipline. He rejected claims that Bumrah was “cherry‑picking” matches. Instead, he said the choice was an agreed plan between player and management. Other players were given support and encouragement to stay engaged even when not selected.

Performance Highlights

Despite limited play, Bumrah delivered strong performances—claiming 14 wickets in the three Tests he played. While India ultimately lost the series, the decision is seen as a commitment to long-term fitness over short-term gain.

What This Means Going Forward

Doeschate stated that putting players’ physical readiness first will help sustain performance over future tours. The team continues to focus on fitness, rotation, and unity. He said this approach supports both player welfare and long-term strategic planning.
