Telangana Bans Children’s Syrup After Toxic Contamination Found
The Telangana government has ordered an immediate ban on the sale and use of Almont-Kid Syrup for children after it was found to be contaminated with toxic ethylene glycol. The state’s drug regulator has directed medical stores, distributors and hospitals to stop dispensing the medicine and remove it from shelves.
The alert follows a report from national drug authorities that lab tests detected ethylene glycol, a highly poisonous industrial chemical, in samples of the cough syrup. Ethylene glycol can cause serious health problems, including kidney and liver damage, if ingested, especially by young children.
Health Advisory and Enforcement
Parents and caregivers have been advised to immediately stop using the syrup if they have it at home and consult a doctor if their child has consumed it recently. District drug inspectors have been instructed to enforce the ban strictly and report any violations.
The Drugs Control Administration said it is actively monitoring the situation and coordinating with other health and safety agencies to prevent further distribution of the contaminated product.
Public Safety Reminder
Authorities stressed that no suspected batches should be sold or prescribed. They urged the public to remain vigilant about children’s medicines and report any adverse effects quickly to health officials.
