Tata Sons to Launch ₹500 Crore Trust for Air India Crash Victims’ Families

Tata Sons has announced a dedicated ₹500 crore trust to support families affected by the Air India Flight AI‑171 crash near Ahmedabad on June 12. The proposal, presented by Chairman N Chandrasekaran, demonstrates the Group’s commitment to enduring care for those impacted by the tragedy.

The AI‑171 Trust will provide a range of assistance, including compensation, medical care, trauma counselling, and educational support. It aims to benefit both Indian nationals and foreign passengers, including British citizens, and could extend to rebuilding community infrastructure—such as the local medical college damaged in the crash.

Tata Trust

Tata Sons will partner with Tata Trusts to co-manage the initiative, combining operational expertise with philanthropic experience. The trust will feature transparent governance through a board comprising Tata representatives and independent members, ensuring both accountability and fairness.

Long-Term Support

In addition to the previously announced ₹1 crore ex gratia per victim, the trust is envisioned to offer sustained assistance—addressing families’ evolving needs through education grants, healthcare funding, and everyday support. Each affected family may receive personalised aid via assigned Tata employees assisting with administrative and emotional requirements during the recovery phase.

Governance Structure

Guided by PB Balaji, Group CFO of Tata Motors, the trust will ensure legal compliance and due diligence. A mixed advisory panel will oversee fund distribution, monitor impact, and examine ongoing needs. The trust’s formation is pending final board approval.
