Tamil Nadu Finance Minister N. Marie Wilson has become embroiled in a political controversy after defending his Tamil during a heated Assembly exchange over his Budget speech. The minister, part of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s government, faced criticism from a DMK MLA over grammatical errors and his use of English.
Marie Wilson Faces Criticism Over Tamil
The controversy began after DMK MLA T.M. Rajendran criticised Wilson’s Tamil during the August 5 Budget presentation. Rajendran said the Finance Minister had made grammatical errors and switched to English, urging him to use better Tamil during future speeches.
Wilson rejected the criticism and said his way of speaking was his “unique style”. He told the MLA that he could only speak in that manner and would not change his style to satisfy others.
Finance Minister Defends His Speaking Style
Assembly Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar intervened during the exchange and urged the minister to take the comments lightly, noting that people had been able to understand his speech.
Wilson then referred to his Christian upbringing, saying it had taught him the language of love and empathy. His remarks further intensified the political dispute.
DMK and BJP Attack Marie Wilson
The DMK continued criticising Wilson, with senior leader T.K.S. Elangovan alleging that the minister had made several mistakes while reading the Budget in Tamil.
The BJP also entered the controversy, accusing Wilson of denigrating the Tamil language. Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagenthran demanded a public apology, arguing that religious identity did not justify remarks perceived as disrespectful towards Tamil.
The episode has now turned a disagreement over language in the Assembly into a broader political confrontation involving the Vijay government, DMK and BJP.
