Taliban Blames Pakistan For Airstrikes In Eastern Afghanistan
Afghanistan’s Taliban-led government has accused Pakistan of carrying out drone strikes on Nangarhar and Khost provinces, which killed three people and left at least seven others injured. According to Afghan officials, the strikes also destroyed several homes, sparking panic among local residents. The Taliban claimed the victims were civilians, although independent verification of the casualties remains unclear.
Diplomatic Protest Lodged
In a strongly worded statement, Afghanistan’s Defense Ministry described the strikes as a “provocative act” that violated Afghan sovereignty. Officials said Pakistan’s ambassador in Kabul was summoned to receive a formal protest. The ministry warned that such “barbaric and brutal actions” could further destabilize the region and worsen already strained relations between the two neighbors. Kabul has repeatedly accused Islamabad of conducting cross-border operations targeting militant groups, charges Pakistan has consistently denied.
Pakistan Silent On Allegations
So far, Pakistan’s government and military have not issued a response to the latest accusations. Similar allegations surfaced in December last year, when the Taliban claimed Pakistani forces launched airstrikes on Afghan territory aimed at militant hideouts. Islamabad did not publicly acknowledge responsibility at the time, though it has often pressed Kabul to take stronger action against groups operating along the border.
Rising Regional Tensions
The incident highlights fragile ties between Afghanistan and Pakistan, marked by disputes over militancy, refugees, and border security. Analysts warn that continued clashes risk escalating into a deeper crisis, complicating peace and stability across South Asia.
